The trends for the marriage amendments are not positive, in my opinion. I mean if I told you in 2000 that in 2012 North Carolina would be where 2000 California is on “gay marriage,” would you have believed me? I wouldn’t have believed me. But that’s exactly what happened.

2014 saw California’s gay marriage amendment (which was overwhelmingly supported) kicked back down by the Supreme Court when Jerry Brown refused to do his elected duty and defend his state’s Constitution. The amendment sponsors were told they “didn’t have standing” which is false. Any state amendment can be invalidated now if the powers that be decide to not abide by it. Referendums mean nothing.
This was all well after 2000.
