The Izumo is part of a more mobile military that Japan is building to defend its far-flung islands to the south, including the contested ones — with or without the United States, if necessary.

Ever notice just how many allies are saying this kind of stuff, these days..?

GOSH I WONDER WHY.

“Soft power,” quite predictably, leads to hard consequences.

Gee, do you suppose the Obungler has anything to do with that? I think he has EVERYTHING to do with it.

Yes, some of us have noticed, and it is VERY frightening. I know there is a lot of sentiment for having our allies build more of their own defenses, to reduce the burden on the US, but this is myopic in the extreme. Allies don't always stay allies, and a "generally armed world" with no entity powerful enough to keep the smaller players in line is headed toward war. Probably, in the long run, it will be a nuclear war, as, again, with no power strong enough to enforce non-proliferation, once, say, Iran has the bomb, or even dirty bombs, others will be forced to respond.

And countries investing in their own armed forces instead of relying on the U.S. to defend them is wrong how?
