...Under its nationalistic prime minister, Shinzo Abe, Japan has embarked on the most sweeping overhaul of its defense posture in recent memory. Not only has Mr. Abe reversed a decade-long decline in military spending as part of what he calls proactive pacifism, but his government is also rewriting laws to lift restrictions on Japans armed forces, which are already taking a more active role as far afield as the Gulf of Aden.

Gee, do you suppose the Obungler has anything to do with that? I think he has EVERYTHING to do with it.
Looking forward to seeing the rising sun rising again.

Ever notice just how many allies are saying this kind of stuff, these days..?
Yes, some of us have noticed, and it is VERY frightening. I know there is a lot of sentiment for having our allies build more of their own defenses, to reduce the burden on the US, but this is myopic in the extreme. Allies don't always stay allies, and a "generally armed world" with no entity powerful enough to keep the smaller players in line is headed toward war. Probably, in the long run, it will be a nuclear war, as, again, with no power strong enough to enforce non-proliferation, once, say, Iran has the bomb, or even dirty bombs, others will be forced to respond.
All one has to do to agree with that statement, is to look at a map of Japan and China. What with China and North Korea having nukes, and the closeness of Tokyo to those nations, I would also bet that Japan has the components ready to go. Especially seeing how crappy Obama is to his allies, I don't think the Japanese government should trust the White House to protect Japan if attacked by China and North Korea. (Our troops would be willing but Obama has the final say, and he would probably take his time while playing golf deciding if he should make a decision.)
No thanks, but it'll probably happen regardless. I oversaw a Japanese infantry platoon during an exercise at Fort Lewis a few years back. They're well equipped, motivated, but not well trained. If they wanted to relive the glory days of the empire, they could probably do it, but the outcome would be the same.
I like it. Just like Washington's first State of the Union Address:
"To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace."
Here she is:
Notice the jack.
Yeahh I was almost going say
Godzilla ping here LOL!
In the novel Dragon’s Head (iirc) by FReeper Jeff Head, India aligns itself with China so as to destroy us.
They lose.
It is a good read.
Dragon’s Fury
Thank you. I read it over a decade ago. The themes stuck with me.
And countries investing in their own armed forces instead of relying on the U.S. to defend them is wrong how?
Of course it’s not.
I think we all know why. :)
Beautiful ship....after building Kansai Airport they can build just about anything IMHO.
.
