Customs officials in Bangladesh have seized gold worth around $1.7m (£1.1m) from the hand luggage of a North Korean diplomat.
Son Young-nam, first secretary at the North Korean embassy in Dhaka, landed in the city on a flight from Singapore on Thursday night.
His baggage was searched and almost 27kg (59lb) of gold bars and ornaments were recovered.
Authorities in Bangladesh say they plan to pursue charges against him.
Mr Son initially refused to allow customs officers and police to examine his luggage.

I thought diplomats had the privilege to enter a country and not have their bags checked? I checked the value of the gold....it’s roughly a million (give or take). He’s probably there to buy something but I can’t think of anything in Bangladesh that you’d want to buy....even with gold.
He came from Singapore and I’m thinking he had gotten paid for selling something. What would he be trading from North Korea? Hostages?
I believe that is only a courtesy, and not a universal one. Diplomatic pouches cannot be searched, but the personal luggage of diplomats can. I am curious about his being arrested though. If he is a diplomat he should have immunity.
It’s a crime to have gold?
Why would that be?
That was his grubstake in the New World. Oh well...
He is investing in a drug operation because that is how North Korea supports itself?
Or buying some meth for the elite.
He could have been there to buy influence or pay for
demonstrators to stir something up.

It’s called yaba, I just found out, but yes, it’s meth.
In Bangladesh a little baksheesh goes a long way? Let them dip their beaks otherwise you are in a heap of trouble boy.
Gold was payment for ICBMs delivered to God knows who.
I told him to let me hold the bags, but no.
They grow their own meth in NK.
