Authorities have identified a man who died after being shot in the face by a Volusia County Sheriff's deputy early Wednesday morning.
The shooting happened while deputies served a search warrant for drugs in Deltona, authorities said.
Deputies said they were serving the warrant in a home on Maybrook Drive when Derek Cruice, 26, advanced on a member of the SWAT team who was entering the residence.
"The search warrant was a narcotics search warrant. It's been an ongoing narcotic investigation," said Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson.
At 6:32 a.m., Deputy Todd Raible, 36, opened fire one time, shooting Cruice in the face while he was inside the doorway of the home, authorities said. He was pronounced dead a short time later at an Orange City hospital.

The precedent for shooting unarmed people in the face was set at Ruby Ridge.
As long as there is precedent the police should be on a sound legal footing...

From the article. I wouldn’t want to be the police officer in this shooting. Still not enough information. Was the victim known to be violent? Weapons in the house? How much drugs was taken in the bust?

If you’re dealing with a “drug house” .. YOU ARE ALWAYS DEALING WITH WEAPONS.
Perhaps they’ll do a follow up, but it doesn’t look as though common sense was used.

You could say the same about a “Republican house”. Still doesn’t give cops the right to barge in and shoot people for no reason.

That’s usually not a well-thought-out move. If they are (or are acting like) intruders, challenge/engage them from cover. And expect return fire no matter who they turn out to be.
