Yes, I know this. Not sure it is germane as to *WHY* the British imported Opium. It would have had the same negative consequences on the population regardless as to *WHY* it arrived there.

What difference would it make to the citizens of a nation to learn that they are being destroyed for profit instead of for fun?

Merwin was an early supporter of the women's rights movement. His aunt was women's suffragist leader, Frances E. Willard. Later in life he expressed the opinion that their emancipation only resulted in underdressed flappers oversupplied with money, automobiles, liquor and wildness.

Rather intolerant, wouldn't you say?
