I am of the opinion that all American citizens be required to become fluent in at least one foreign language. I do not care which language one would choose. It could be Spanish, French or Swahili or any one of the thousands of foreign languages as long as they become fluent in at least one foreign language.
Why?
After 9/11 there was an extreme shortage of interpreters of Arabic, Farsi and whatever gibberish they speak in Afghanistan or Pakistan.
I chose to try to become fluent in Spanish because it is the most useful in this part of the country. However, I am now working on Chinese, too. ;-)
They speak Urdu in Pakistan, and Pashto and Dari in Afghanistan.
