I was Big Brother for a bit so I know what a bumbling mess they really are. Most people won’t care as long as they can stream their sports and celebrity gossip sites. The majority of people do not pay any attention to politics. As evidence I give you voter turnout statistics.
Most politicians, even Republicans, would rather that political websites were muzzled. As evidence I give you John McCain and his perpetual campaign finance reform acts which in reality are incumbent protection acts.
The political class want the rest of us to shut up and take what’s good for us.

Such a candidate would be shunned by the party. They would get no support from the national party and no support from the party as far as campaign advisors or feet on the ground.
They would be attacked by the press from both sides. They would be seen as an invading virus by the body politic.
As example look at how Rand Paul and Ted Cruz are treated and they are moderate compared to the candidate you describe.
