Back in the 70s I believe Airborne was considered one of the ‘special forces’.

That’s what I was thinking. I hope someone here really knows if you are right and it applies here.

I was in the 101st Airborne in 1967 and we were not considered special forces. That was reserved for Green Berets and Rangers.

In 1968 I joined The Redcatchers of the 199th Light Inf. and they had a Ranger unit and a LRP Unit.
....................................
M COMPANY (RANGER), 75TH INFANTRY (AIRBORNE), 199TH LIGHT INFANTRY BRIGADE

71ST INFANTRY DETACHMENT (AIRBORNE, LRP), 199TH LIGHT INFANTRY BRIGADE
...
The rest of us Redcatchers were just Air Mobile (=We Were Soldiers= type) grunts, a lot of us had Airborne jump wings, but were not Special Forces. Of course testosterony 18 year olds like I was at the time all thought we were badasses :-)

I would guess from your tagline that you were in the 4/12th.

Thanks for clearing that up. Airborne is NOT Special Forces.

Thank you for your service! My son is a Ranger right now and he tells me that the LRP’s oh that day are still thought of with great respect.
