First I've heard of this story. Too bad he has to go back to court. Don't know much about St. Clair Shores except that at one point it was supposed to have been a nice suburb of Detroit.
Yet poor O.J. Simpson is in jail.
Are they accusing him of ‘robbing a robber’ by removing evidence which should have been turned into the police, and not directly back to his daughter? If that’s the case, someone is trying to wreck his career by bring this to trial, when they could have just put a letter of reprimand in his employee file and done some retraining. Am I missing something?
I used to work over on that side of detroit. The only mistake that I see is that they left a perp alive to talk. The east side is carjack-murder for a car city. The rule in that area is: no cop, no stop, and shoot anyone who steps in front of your car.
If I recall correctly it was reported as a robbery because the cop went to Detroit and basically held the guy up at a gas station and took the phone.
Its possible that the $300, pot and gun had something to do with it. If he just took the cell phone, I am not thinking we would hear about this.
But I sure bet it felt good to catch the maggots and watch their eyes when they figured out how busted they were and the rules did not apply.

Yeah this was an armed robbery despite the stolen property.
I'm all for holding any officer to the exact same standard as a regular citizen. But this looks to be a case where charges are being piled up BECAUSE they were officers, and that I don't agree with.
As for the whole ‘I did it because my personal information was on there’ - hasn't iPhones had the same remote wipe features that Android phones have for quite some time? Wipe and lock the phone and report the location to local police to handle.
Oh, and of course, fire whatever DA decided to make a deal for a year sentence for a felon claiming his gun and drugs were stolen after committing armed robbery.
The elements you mentioned ($300., Pot & a Gun) DO complicate this case a great deal, and cannot be ignored.
However, he will always have the inward satisfaction of seeing the look on that thugs face when he ‘reclaimed’ his daughter’s phone. He will remain a hero to his daughter forevermore.
More than just wreck his career. He faces life in prison for the robbery. He is accused of stealing an already stolen gun, marijuana and $300 from the suspects. His partner pled guilty to a misdemeanor (felony charges were dropped when the phone thieves couldn't keep their story straight). The suspects served a year for stealing his daughter's iPhone.
Get me a ticket too. I’ll pay you double.
I think you're right.
We extend immunity to law enforcement because we realize that humans make mistakes. The requirement for a warrant is part of the mechanism we use to minimize the opportunity and impact of such mistakes.
In this case, there is every reason to treat the off-duty cop the same way WE would be treated. If I had committed this crime, I'm pretty sure I would end up doing time.
The “victims” of the second robbery stole that phone fair and square, in the first robbery. /lib logic
I grew up there. It was a nice suburb but it’s getting older and I think they are paying the price of being near Detroit.
