You are right that he skipped the early primaries all the way to Florida. But,IIRC, he skipped the early states precisely because of his liberal social positions.

Places like Iowa and New Hampshire don’t have a recent record of being unfriendly to GOP liberals.

I forgot about his skipping IA and NH; they could have been good states for him, particularly NH.
