Greece Bailout Talks Break Down After Athens Rejects 'Unacceptable' Eurozone Demands Creditors present ultimatum as finance minister insists other members must water down austerity conditions if country is to reach honourable agreement
Jennifer Rankin 16 February 2015 Talks between Greece and its eurozone creditors collapsed in disarray on Monday night, heightening concerns that the country is edging closer to a disruptive exit from the single currency.
The breakdown of discussions in Brussels over the Greek bailout programme appeared to leave both sides as far apart as ever, although eurozone finance ministers said a last-ditch summit could be held on Friday.
However, the Greek delegation was told in no uncertain terms that talks would recommence only if the country was willing to extend its bailout package, which carries a list of austerity measures that the new left-wing government in Athens has vowed to pare back.
Effectively presenting Greece with an ultimatum, the eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers said Athens had until Friday to agree to maintain the current bailout under the auspices of the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund something that Greece has said is unacceptable.
Greeces finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, made it clear in the acrimonious discussions in Brussels on Monday that Greece would not accept prolonging the bail out for six months unless the other 18 members of the eurozone agreed to water down the austerity conditions attached to the deal.

I read about this in the German papers yesterday. The Germans think the Greeks are acting as though they live on another planet.
Good. Time to bury the EU
The Greeks have devolved into arrogant beggars. They are similar to raging adolescents who are demanding a doubling of their allowance and refuse to do any real work. Such people usually end up as delinquents.
It sounds like Greece went with a deal they were ready to sign, under a “new Arrangement”, and “someone” at the ECB tried to change the language of the agreement, committing them to “agreeing to do what the ECB says”.
When the Greek Finance guy saw that, he went ape...
GIBSMEDAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
germans owe the greeks billions for ww2 reparations, looting, mass murder.
i have no dog in this fight but i want to see the globalists beaten at every turn. greece’s debt is not large enough to crash the eurozone unless its worse than they are letting on.
where is christine legarde? gone into hiding with hillary?
The only way out for Greece is to default and go back to the Drachma. It will be very painful for awhile, but staying with the Euro they will be crushed for decades trying to pay back those debts.
It will be really painful and real when they can no longer import the necessities of modern living.
“Germans owe the Greeks billions for ww2 reparations, looting, mass murder.”
And just what does that have to do with the current situation? That war ended 70 years ago, and it has nothing to do with the Greeks current (and long-standing situation). The problem is that the rest of Europe has been propping them up and paying them off long enough. Greece is just the worst of the PIIGS countries. They need to man up and start acting like a country instead of a bunch of beggars and layabouts.
“germans owe the greeks billions for ww2 reparations, looting, mass murder.”
Not so. after WWII, Germany was destitute, basically a pile of rubble, and was unable to pay reparations to Germany. The U.S., wanting a Democratic Greece to anchor Europes southern flank against the USSR, paid reparations to Greece in Germany’s behalf. Also, in 1990, Greece signed an agreement with Germany basically stating that the reparations issue was settled. But, we all know what Greeks think about signed agreements. Greeks keep threatening to open relationships with Russia or China in exchange for money. I say let them go their own way and do what they will. They, hate the EU, can’t wait to see how they would like their new master, either Russia or China. I term “Faustian Deal” comes to mind, lol :)
“Germans owe the Greeks billions for ww2 reparations, looting, mass murder.”
Germans have a guilt complex about WWII which makes them easy pickings for Greeks imposing guilt trips on them. And, up till now Germany has been willing to fund Greece’s Socialist paradise. However, an ever diminishing numer of Germans, or their parents for that matter, were alive during the war. To them, WWII is ancient history. Consequently, they’re growing weary of Greece’s constant badgering for money. Seem like that dog may not hunt anymore, lol!
i agree that the greeks need to go their own way.
Exactly. The same mentality.
The new Greek Prime Ministers is a self described atheist Communist.
The implications for their refusal to pay their debts could drive the entire EU into economic meltdown.
“Seems like that dog may not hunt anymore, lol!”
So the Greeks have been Germany’s “Gibbsmedats,” just like the Blacks here in America. Isn’t that “special!”
One of the unspoken issues is the “surrender” of mineral rights in the Aegean Sea. (for those in rio linda, oil)
The EU is trying to 1. prevent local development by Greece. (see keystone, shale oil, etc) 2. assign all mineral profits and exploration to Germany/eu.
the eu oligarchs fear others will want the same deal. Why not just give it to all?
it was not the fact he won as much as their version of the “uniparty” lost.
so I wonder which language that was “slipped in”?
Germany has been a socialist paradise too.
It is not a guilt trip issue, reparations were never paid. But that is another issue.
I think the fact that there was new language that magically appeared in the negotiated document speaks volumes. To pull such a juvenile stunt, the eurocrats must have thought Obama was signing the document.
