One thing I have learned here is that there are not many differences between liberals and conservatives.

Just like in any group, you have the smaller segment that has internalized the principles of the group, and the larger group that is just following along with the crowd. When those people try to think for themselves, there is no telling what the results will be, because they don’t have any principles of their own to guide them.
