Well, did the media get it right???

Race Fever scratched in Corning NY: Race Fever, the annual block party on Corning's Bridge Street that kicks off NASCAR Sprint Cup weekend at Watkins Glen International - won't be held anymore, the Gaffer District announced Friday. A new event on Bridge Street, to be called Taste of Summer, will replace it on the city's downtown event schedule. Taste of Summer will be held July 23. Race Fever was discontinued due to the "exorbitant cost" of booking Sprint Cup drivers to sign autographs, Gaffer District officials said. Without the appearances by NASCAR stars, the crowds began to dwindle. Race Fever couldn't have been held this summer anyway, due to construction on the city's planned $465,000 "traffic-calming" project on Bridge Street. The project, expected to begin Aug. 1, will include pedestrian safety improvements and streetscaping. Race Fever was usually held during the second week of August. This year would have been the 30th Race Fever. The event - which featured show cars and NASCAR memorabilia vendors - began in 1985 after NASCAR returned to Watkins Glen. For many years, it was held on Market Street. During the height of its popularity, open containers of alcohol were allowed on the streets. The discontinuing of Race Fever may impact Corning Meals on Wheels, a volunteer-run non-profit that delivers daily meals to homebound seniors.(Corning Leader)(2-15-2015)
