As Islam spread thru Europe, many non-Muslims were taken prisoner and sent back as slaves. One of the motivating factors for the first “Crusades” was to liberate neighbors and family members than had been enslaved by the Muslims. Those participating would be surprised to hear themselves referred to Crusaders, since that term was not used until the 19th century. Crusades refer to any military force that was sanctioned by the Pope. Most of the later Crusades did not end well for the Crusaders.
