I have heard higher figures - 8,000 to 20,000 - over a period of several hundred years, but whatever the figure is, it is a tiny fraction of the "millions" figure that is often cited in popular literature and press accounts.

The figure is also far less than the number killed in the first year of the French Revolution, and a small fraction of the number killed by leftist governments and leftist revolutions in the 20th century, or by Muslim extremists in the last 20 years.
