He is stuck in an America First Committee time warp much as Nelson Mandella, who was otherwise a fairly nice fellow, was stuck in a early 1960s anti-colonial time warp.

He is an American Firster, and you know, why doesn't anyone question the motivations of the Firsters. Yes, I imagine the majority had an ideological opposition to WWII, but I bet many didn't want to lose their lucrative chemical and business contracts they had with Germany.
