Referencing Crusades, Obama puts Islamic extremism in historical perspective
Jerusalem Post ^ | 02/05/2015 | MICHAEL WILNER

US President Barack Obama has long refused to refer to the scourge of terrorism gripping the Middle East as Islamic extremism, and on Thursday, he defended that position with a bit of history.

The challenges facing Islam today are not unique to the religion, Obama said, but reflective of a "sinful tendency" in all societies to "pervert and distort" faiths.

"Humanity has been grappling with these questions throughout human history," Obama said at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. "And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ."

And yet the president's position is in line with that of his Republican predecessor. While coining phrases Obama rejects in characterizing America's war on terrorism, George W. Bush never characterized the fight in religious terms and, in fact, campaigned against the notion.

At the breakfast, Obama also defended worldwide condemnation of Charlie Hebdo's cartoons, and squared why such denouncements were in line with liberal principles.

"If, in fact, we defend the legal right of a person to insult another’s religion, we’re equally obligated to use our free speech to condemn such insults," he told the group to applause.

Without knowing what he said (since he read something written by someone else from a teleprompter) he admitted we’re at war with Islam.

The guy could have been forgiven for uttering this in the first month of his first term as the ignorant utterances of a naïve ideologue.

But after six years in office, and especially after the events of the last month...Jesus this is scary.

Seriously? He brought up the Crusades?

He really has to be the absolute dumbest person on the planet.

The crusades were a defensive action because that so called “religion of peace” was raping, pillaging, and slaughtering their way thru the holy land.

Jeremiah Wright isn’t Obama’s only ‘preacher’. Louis Farrakhan is the other one.

unlike muslims who invaded and conquered and were starting to harass europe and take it over by extreme violence,

the crusades were the result of fighting back against muslims advancing on non-muslim territories. the christians didn’t just do offensive crusades as part of normal life. it was defensiveand to take back what muslims took from them and the other peoples of the middle east. essentially the territories mof the eastern roman empire/byzantine empire.

Obama's in-your-face remark to the Christian meeting about the Crusades has to be one of the worst tu qouque logical falllacies I have ever run into. The Crusades were about the vicious treatment of Christians by maurauding Muslims conquering from the East. Pope Urban called for them in response to the depredations of the Muslims against the Christians.

That the Crusaders did pograms or attacks against the Jews on their way to the Middle East was not what Pope Urban wanted and he told the Crusaders not to do that, but, instead keep with the program of going to the Middle East and dealing the brutal Muslims. Does one see ISIL telling people not to burn pilots and decapitate people? Obama picked a very poor tu qouque logical fallacy to give his rhetorical middle finger to this Christian audience. The affirmative action Hitler can't even lay a smear and/or guilt trip on people properly.

The Real History of the Crusades: An Act of Love
THOMAS F. MADDEN

By Aug 28, 2014

The article below was written by one of the worlds foremost experts on the Crusades. I saw it over at Shoebat.com and was so impressed by it I wanted to post it here. It kinda long but it is written very well and is an easy read. I would deem this as a MUST READ and I’m sure many of you will.

BY THOMAS F. MADDEN
With the possible exception of Umberto Eco, medieval scholars are not used to getting much media attention.

What they really wanted was an expert to say it all back to them. For example, I was frequently asked to comment on the fact that the Islamic world has a just grievance against the West. Doesn’t the present violence, they persisted, have its roots in the Crusades’ brutal and unprovoked attacks against a sophisticated and tolerant Muslim world? In other words, aren’t the Crusades really to blame?

Misconceptions about the Crusades are all too common. The Crusades are generally portrayed as a series of holy wars against Islam led by power-mad popes and fought by religious fanatics. They are supposed to have been the epitome of self-righteousness and intolerance, a black stain on the history of the Catholic Church in particular and Western civilization in general.

So what is the truth about the Crusades? Scholars are still working some of that out. But much can already be said with certainty. For starters, the Crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They were a direct response to Muslim aggression—an attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands.

Christians in the eleventh century were not paranoid fanatics. Muslims really were gunning for them. While Muslims can be peaceful, Islam was born in war and grew the same way. From the time of Mohammed, the means of Muslim expansion was always the sword. Muslim thought divides the world into two spheres, the Abode of Islam and the Abode of War. Christianity—and for that matter any other non-Muslim religion—has no abode. Christians and Jews can be tolerated within a Muslim state under Muslim rule.

But, in traditional Islam, Christian and Jewish states must be destroyed and their lands conquered. When Mohammed was waging war against Mecca in the seventh century, Christianity was the dominant religion of power and wealth.

As the faith of the Roman Empire, it spanned the entire Mediterranean, including the Middle East, where it was born. The Christian world, therefore, was a prime target for the earliest caliphs, and it would remain so for Muslim leaders for the next thousand years.

The rest of the history

Obama passed up a chance to condemn the Jews too because the Israelites massacred the Amalekites (I Samuel 15).
