FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gun owners in Kentucky can get permits to carry concealed weapons under a new online application process.
The Courier-Journal reports that the process requires state police to either issue or deny a license within 15 days of receiving an electronic application. That's quicker than the 60-day processing period allowed for paper applications.

But critics say it's yet another bow to Kentucky gun culture that endangers the community and invites more opportunities for violence.
Rep. Jim Wayne, a Louisville Democrat opposed to the new rules, says state police are already hurting for personnel and that having officials process applications within 15 days could result in mistakes, such as approving permits for people with criminal histories.
"This is a legislature that is pretty much shackled to the NRA, and whatever the NRA wants to promote, their unreasonable, immoral agenda is what the legislative leaders and the rank and file will probably follow," he said.
What I find interesting is that none of the reports I could find really pointed out that this changes nothing you have to do to get the CCDW permit here. It simply means that instead of filling out the paperwork by hand and mailing it in *AFTER* you have successfully completed the class, you fill out the same form and it goes in electronically. It simply means the state can process a criminal background more expeditiously rather than by hand. Nobody is getting the permit without taking and passing the class. Nobody is getting the permit without the same scrutiny as before as regards criminal history. *Nothing* has changed. Yet the anti gun commies here lie, making claims that have no basis in fact. And rags like the CJ skim over the inconvenient facts that discredit the gun haters.
...”the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed...”
(GTH Ky with your ‘permits!’ We do NOT need your ‘permission’ to keep and bear arms.)
“gun culture that endangers the community and invites more opportunities for violence”
As opposed to aspiring rappers and meth heads running unchecked. Illegal aliens driving drunk and raping women. Measles and other diseases on the rise. ISIS burning people and trying to get Sharia law over here.
I’ll take the gun “violence” anyday.
Take a deep breath. Kentucky is an open carry state.
Although I have issues with CCDW permits in principle, everyone in my family has taken the class and has a CCDW, and I feel that it would be foolish for an individual to not learn what is taught in the class. And I know darn well that a lot of poorly informed people would be carrying concealed with unpleasant results.
It’s not hard to get the permit here, and the state has shown a real interest in seeing that everyone who is not a criminal can easily get one.
One class instructor noted how many (men?) came into the class thinking big balls macho & finished a lot more reluctant about gun use. i.e. common sense was stimulated, as well as an understanding of state law when using a gun in self defense.
Look at the numbers, yearly permits issued went up by a factor of 6 in nine years. I’d say the state is facilitating CC pretty well on balance. Keep in mind that we have a wacko liberal governor (grrr).
I am all for people getting training.
Yes we agree this is super good.
(It is still none of the govt’s business one way or the other)
