U.S. Taking a Fresh Look at Arming Ukraine’s Forces, Officials Say

WASHINGTON — With Russian-backed separatists pressing their attacks in Ukraine, NATO’s military commander, Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, now supports providing defensive weapons and equipment to Kiev’s beleaguered forces, and an array of administration and military officials appear to be edging toward that position, American officials said Sunday.

President Obama has made no decisions on providing such lethal assistance. But after a series of striking reversals that Ukraine’s forces have suffered in recent weeks, the Obama administration is taking a fresh look at the question of military assistance.

Secretary of State John Kerry, who plans to visit Kiev on Thursday, is open to new discussions about providing lethal aid, as is Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, officials said. Continue reading the main story Related Coverage

In recent months, Susan E. Rice, Mr. Obama’s national security adviser, has resisted proposals to provide lethal assistance, several officials said. But one official said that she was now prepared to reconsider the issue.

I think the article has a slight inaccuracy. The first sentence implies that General Philip Breedlove has had a change of heart. In fact he was already in favor of providing weapons for Ukraine at least in last April. The rest of the article makes it clearer that Susan Rice was the one holding it back.

How could Russia complain? They keep telling us that they are not invading Ukraine.

No good can come from arming a (duly elected) Ukrainian faction against Russia, and where most of the fighting is within 100 miles of Russia proper.

I believe advocates of this position are mistaken.

I’m not buying this propaganda.

A few things I know - yeah Russia is run by thugs.
So is a lot of the world including the Ukraine. (Some would say that the Socialist that run the USA are alsothugs that don’t respect the rule of law)

The ‘revolution’ in the Ukraine was accomplished with CIA boots on the ground and Soros funding. This broke - un-did - the deal that Reagan made - that we would not interfere with countries that bordered Russia and they would not mess with ones that bordered the USA.

That deal ended the cold-war which (if you have been paying attention has started again.)

There is no surprise to me that the Russians reacted by taking the Crimea - of strategic importance to the Russians now that a hostile Ukraine borders them.

The idiotic policy that led to this mess is because Obama’s people got their egos hurt due to the Syrian stupidity.

All of these conflicts are about petroleum or petroleum pipelines. Saudi’s want pipes to Europe - Assad is what prevents that. Russians want to sell their petro through pipes that run through the Ukraine - where they steal some of the product.

So you can pick the winner - the thugs in Saudi or the thugs in Russia - I don’t want to have a dog in this race.

The big problem today is that our government does not represent us - it represents Saudi money and China money.

The fact of this is that the Russians have real nukes and the means to deliver them - and I think it is stupid to push them into a corner.

Those other countries are not Ukraine, and were never part of Greater Russia going back to Catherine the Great.

This is Europe's problem. Let them deal with it. We've got our hands full enough with the Middle East.

But I guess you haven't gotten your fill of war and what it has done to our military over the past 13 years.

Look - you don’t get it - there are no ‘good guys’ there. Supporting the more pro-muslim Ukraine side over the Russian thugs with nukes is a negative sum game. We lose if we play the game - we don’t lose if we don’t play.

The idiots running the state departments have undone just about everything Reagan did - including putting Russia on a peaceful path.
