Russian spies operating a cell in New York were trying to find ways to cause an economic meltdown, according to court documents.
The three men allegedly wanted to destabilise high frequency trading systems, which were blamed for the Wall St Flash Crash of 2010.

The FBI began investigating the men in 2010 after ten Russian spies living in the US were arrested, including red-haired femme fatale Anna Chapman.
Last night the exposure of the latest spy ring threatened to turn into a diplomatic row as Russia said there was no evidence against the trio.
Prosecutors in New York named the spies as Igor Sporyshev, 40, who was working as a trade representative, and Victor Podobnyy, 27, who was an attache to the Russian mission at the UN.
They were the handlers of Evgeny Buryakov, 39, a banker at Vnesheconombank, a former Soviet bank owned by the Russian state with an office in Manhattan.
By the time the cell was cracked by the FBI on Monday, Sporyshev and Podobnyy had left America. However Buryakov was arrested and appeared before a federal judge where prosecutors said: His life here is a deception.

Someone's been watching The Dark Knight Rises a few too many times.
Good movie plot, just saying
Whatever happened to “Sandy Burglar”?..
I’m thinking...never mind.
What’s the frequency, Kenneth?
I have suspected since 2001 that Russian spies have been infiltrating American companies and government for just such a purpose.
By using H1b visa and outsourcing, they can underbid most American contractors and get paid while they plot computer crashes and send back technical docs.
“High frequency” refers to the frequency of the he TRADES and has nothing to do with radios or their transmit/receive frequencies.
Hang them all.
Bigger problem with the Chinese, IMHO. Even if they are not sabotaging, every single bit of Anerican intellectual property gets stolen and transferred back to the motherland.
Yep - the Daily Mail has idiots for reporters.
(but then so does the New York Times)
They blew the abbreviation for Exchange Traded Funds, too.
That popped out at me, too.
Freaking Journalists. They might know a thing or two about grammar, and suddenly they get to write about EVERYTHING like they know what they hell they are talking about.
Wonder if this will get a retraction.
Heck, maybe they are referring to Trade-io transmissions.
Furthermore, later in the article, they say one person was denied bail because he was a flight risk.
I almost expected them to start talking about how flight risks are placed on the FAA No Fly list, because they are a risk when in flight.
