The Obama administration on Monday announced an ambitious goal to overhaul the way doctors are paid, tying their fees more closely to the quality of care rather than the quantity.
Rather than pay more money to Medicare doctors simply for every procedure they perform, the government will also evaluate whether patients are healthier, among other measures. The goal is for half of all Medicare payments to be handled this way by 2018.
Mondays announcement marks the administrations biggest effort yet to shape how doctors are compensated across the health-care system. As the country's largest payer of health-care services, Medicare influences medical care generally, meaning the changes being initiated by the administration will likely be felt in doctor's offices and hospitals across the country.
As a very large payer in the system, we believe we have a responsibility to lead," said Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell in a press conference. "For the first time, were going to set clear goals and establish a clear timeline for moving from volume to value in the Medicare system.

“the government will also evaluate whether patients are healthier, among other measures.”
but of course. the government can’t very well justify healthcare “cost-cutting” measures without appropriate patient “evaluation.”
“If you like your doctor...
Too bad”
Wrong, if your doctor can’t make a buck on you, too bad for you!
Death Panels Dux. “We don’t have to tell doctors what we will and won’t pay for, we will just cut their pay if they work on seriously ill people!”
So in other words, if the doctor doesn’t think you are likely to get better, at least in terms of how the government defines “better”, they won’t see you. What could go wrong...
They are all policy wonks at the EPA, DHS and HHS with the largest concentration being found in the Department of Education.
That is, except for the 17 individuals who had moral fiber and above average IQs. They post late night on FreeRepublic.
“If you think healthcare is expensive now, wait until it’s free.”
My former doctor, 2010
The physicians and health care providers are going to have to give up a bigger piece of their pie so the ‘Wesley Mouch’ health care ‘administrators’ in the Department of Health and IRS can have more pie.
Then we can start calling the paper-pushing bureaucrats who deny your claim, health-care providers and we’ll call the doctors, administrators.
Beat you by eleven seconds. :-)
unhealthy people won’t be able to find a doctor to save their lives . . . Literally. which sucks, since unhealthy people are usually the only people looking for doctors in the first place.
but, hey, federal control of public schools based on how smart the kids are has worked so well . . .
God wants us to detest and fight evil so maybe we’re being too hard on ourselves.
As the country's largest payer of health-care services, Medicare . . .
Letting that become the reality is the heart of the matter.
I know a good many Baby Boomers who have their little undies in a wad over the government being in Health Care and everything else but these same Boomers were eager to move their parents property into their names so Mom & Dad qualified for every government program available.
Now they just can't seem to admit they had a thing in the world to do with the current mess.
JMHo
Wish we could do the same to politicians
Yeah, but mine’s more detailed.
Socialized medicine means that all the employees of said system including physicians are nothing but glorified postal workers. Free enterprise, competition, and customer satisfaction have been effectively quashed.
I hope the governments definition of “healthy” includes heartbeat and respiration...
Could you think of a better incentive for 8 years worth of school debt you can’t ditch in bankruptcy + residency time?
I bet they’ll have to fend off the crowds clamoring to get into med school in a few years with tasers!
