Really stupid planning and strategy. The Warthog A-10 is probably one of the most fearsome engines of war any column of armor or transport has ever faced. Able to puncture and blow away tanks, they make mincemeat of a supply or infantry placement, and the sound of their approach should and does strike terror into the hearts of the opposing force.
Essentially, it is a cannon with wings, and it is of relatively very high maneuverability, nearly indestructible, able to still fly when reduced to practically tatters, because of all of its redundant internal control systems. Hydraulics, redundant back-up hydraulics, and if both fail, still mechanical control of the air control surfaces, and even with large parts of those same air control surfaces severely damaged, it can still cripple home on one engine, if need be.
Rather than scrap the program, ship most of the remaining stock and parts inventory to Israel, to bolster their own defense forces.
I couldn’t agree more with everything except your final recommendation. Congress should reject this budget cut, fund continued production, and send the A-10’s to the Marines. They would know exactly what to do with them.
