Even with modern genetics studies there is some debate about the origins since there are similar organisms and diseases related to them found in mediterranean and caribbean cultures and history. There are still many ivory tower experts arguing these points today.
There is NO doubt that Mohammed raped his way through many cultures throughout the middle east as did his followers. There were other venereal diseases around at that time - there are arguments about whether Herod I died from one (or several) or just run of the mill complications of hypertension, diabetes and peripheral artery disease (atherosclerosis).
STDs are like that. They’ve been around forever and the more you “play the field,” like any zero sum game, eventually you catch one or several.
