The NFL is upping the stakes in its probe of the New England Patriots and unleashing one of the countrys top lawyers and a high-powered investigative firm to uncover the truth behind a scandal that has cast a dark cloud over the team as they prepare for the Super Bowl.
League officials broke their silence on the Deflategate scandal yesterday, announcing that high-powered white-collar crime lawyer Ted Wells will join NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Pash on the investigation into whether the Pats knowingly used under-inflated footballs in the American Football Conference championship game.
He is one of the premier lawyers in the United States, he has great credibility, hes well-known in the field and his reputation is stellar, said Larry Krantz of the New York law firm Krantz & Berman when asked about Wells. Hes a very serious lawyer, his integrity is beyond reproach and this is certainly an indication that (the NFL) is taking the investigation very seriously.
The high-powered investigative firm Renaissance Associates also will be reviewing electronic and video information that could reveal whether team personnel let the air out of the balls after they were inspected by the referees, the NFL said.
Wells, who the league tapped to lead an investigation into bullying in the Miami Dolphins locker room in 2013, was named one of The Decades Most Influential Lawyers in 2010 by the National Law Journal. He famously and successfully defended former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer against federal charges he hid payments to a prostitution ring.

Sure. Wonder if they've interviewed Tom Brady yet?
Buy the time this law firm (at 2K or better an hour) gets anywhere, the Super Bowl will be over.
I really do not expect to see anything happening to anyone in the Patriots organization. If it does, it will happen well after the SuperBowl is played.

And there we thought that our government was the only corrupt entity in our country today. Megyn Kelly had a guy on tonight that ferrets out deception from what people say. He essentially said that both the coach and the quarterback were lying in their press conferences. And he pointed out the reasons why he came to that conclusion.
What does OJ have to say about this situation?
I’m guessing they’ll stretch this out past the Super Bowl.
I dont even care for football, but after reading about this on FR several times today, I have to echo your question. [Leapfrog0202, post #7]
Yup. Boston Globe's Ben Volin was asking this same question today:
NFLs silence on Deflategate is deafening
"The NFL hasnt yet interviewed the person whom most everyone else in the league believes is the central figure in this mess Tom Brady." -- see Boston Globe Sports Section
What a joke. The Carolina Panthers were heating footballs up on national TV this year & were just told to stop....no fine, nothing.
“I really do not expect to see anything happening to anyone in the Patriots organization. If it does, it will happen well after the SuperBowl is played.”
Sure, because it’s all about the money! The Super Bowl is their golden calf. They wouldn’t do anything that would affect their revenue stream. The high-priced lawyer is there for damage control not to find out the truth. And to take the direct heat off of the worthless commissioner who screwed up the last time he had an issue with which to deal.
There isn’t anything special in the rules as to the temperature but there is as to air pressure.
Same difference. Minor offence. Fine them 25k & move on.
Well, hey, at least in that case the refs knew somebody personal with the Panthers to "stop" whatever needed to be "stopped."
We know New England cheated here. But, for some daggone reason, we just can't get the Pats to identify who's the one the NFL needs to tell them to "stop" "hissing" those balls.
The Patriots hired an elite expert witness.

Case closed.
Freegards, waiting for opening day
Guess hiring an All-Amateur lawyer wouldn't fit in with the NFL's penchant for over-hyping everything.
No the Carolina Panthers said they didn’t know anything about it and I believed them.
