This is where we find ourselves now. Every citizen in Europe and the UK faces the risk of an Islamic attack merely while going about normal day-to-day business. UK citizens in particular face this risk whilst being denied weapons of self defense. In the past I have fully and enthusiastically supported the UK’s complete ban on hand guns. But immediately after the killing of Lee Rigby I began to reconsider the wisdom of that ban and I now utterly oppose it. As things stand in the UK, hand guns are illegal. For those shotguns you could own, extremely strict licensing specifically disallows self defense as a motive for ownership and so the old adage “In countries where guns are illegal, only the criminals have guns” is the frankly mad situation we now have in the UK.

Those privately owned American firearms loaned to Britain in WWII were melted down, and that is somehow BETTER!!?

This probably won’t help with your dilemma, but many Americans are armed with better small arms than your soldiers, not only with sidearms but battle rifles and kit. (For that matter, our own soldiers.)
That must be why so many of you Brits who “fully and completely supported the UK’s complete ban” considered us to be yahoo cowboys. Oh well. We see it, once again, differently. Good to see you have come around though.

Good day to you Scotsman. I tried to warn off someone that you would probably weigh in once you saw the post. I seem to remember early on that it was 911 but I may be wrong on that. Of course when I lived in London(’61-’63) you still called folks using a name and number. White Hall 3757. LOL!

What a waste if they were! I know that back in the early 1970s several US Coast Guard cutters dumped tens of thousands of handguns confiscated in NYC into the ocean.

The HG was being disbanded, the guns weren’t suitable for frontline British troops, so the decision was made to melt them down for war production. Remember we needed every scrap of metal we needed, from old guns to metal fences.
I am not saying its right, just passing on the history.

Are there restrictions on air guns? Creative individuals could come up with all kinds of effective air guns, making ones with high rates of fire or increasing the caliber of the round.
A few years ago a Brit and his wife came and stayed in one of our guest cabins. I asked him if he’d like to do some target practice. His eyes lit up and by the end of the day he was grinning ear to ear...

No, the British have been citizens as opposed to subjects since the Nationality Act of 1948, technically 1st Jan 1949.
