Part of me wants to go all ‘purity of the game’ and then I think fondly of Gaylord Perry throwing a spitter when I was a kid growing up.
I think I do draw a line, though, certainly steroid use seems to be inappropriately cheating. As though there is something like appropriate cheating.

Funny you should say that. I was thinking the same thing. I also remember Perry saying he rarely through the spitter but just having the batter KNOW he could throw it was a big psychological advantage. To paraphrase Yogi Berra; Sports are 90% mental and the other half is physical..

Is bluffing in poker “cheating”? IMO, in games, anything that does not risk injury to oneself or another, such as Detroit Lions stomping opponents or Tom Brady having his eye poked, is part of the jostling and psychology of competition. No big deal.
