Traces Of Oil Found In Montana Town's Water Supply After Spill
NPR ^ | 1/20/2015 | KRISHNADEV CALAMUR

Officials in Montana say they have detected traces of oil in the water supply of the town of Glendive, days after up to 50,000 gallons of oil spilled from a break in a pipeline along the Yellowstone River.

NPR's Kirk Siegler is reporting on the story for our Newscast unit. He says:

"The EPA and other emergency responders are having bottled water shipped to ... Glendive. Preliminary tests have indicated that some traces of oil have entered Glendive's water supply. There have been no reports yet of injuries, but the damage assessment is ongoing and everything is being hampered by the fact that parts of the Yellowstone River are frozen this time of the year." Elevated levels of benzene, a cancer-causing compound, were found in samples taken from a water treatment plant that serves the community of about 6,000 people.

Ok I'll bite, WHY?

Mostly it was accidental. The anti-freeze was on purpose. It tasted sweet.

So what's in our city water mains?

Cryptosporidium parasites, neurological drugs, high blood pressure meds,anti-inflammatories,antibiotics,reproductive hormones.

Rust,minerals of various kinds.

Some of dis, some of dat.

You are VERY fortunate to be alive. (assuming the antifreeze was ethylene glycol [green] not propylene glycol [pink] antifreeze.)

Ethylene glycol poisoning is caused by the ingestion of ethylene glycol, the primary ingredient in automotive antifreeze. Ethylene glycol is a toxic, colorless, odorless, almost nonvolatile liquid with a sweet taste that is sometimes accidentally consumed by children and animals due to its sweetness. Following ingestion the symptoms of poisoning progress from signs similar to intoxication and vomiting; to hyperventilation, metabolic acidosis, and cardiovascular dysfunction; and finally acute kidney failure. The major cause of toxicity is not the ethylene glycol itself but its metabolites, mainly glycolic acid and oxalic acid.

Treatment for antifreeze poisoning needs to be started as soon after ingestion as possible to be effective; the earlier treatment is started, the greater the chance of survival. Once kidney failure develops in dogs and cats, the prognosis is poor. Poisoning is relatively common, and due to its taste, children, domestic animals and wildlife sometimes consume the substance

I’ll wager that even 90% of Freepers are unaware of the catastrophe MTBE caused in the nations water supplies.

I have worked water treatment and distribution.

One example is a small community hooked up to a rural well a few miles away. The pipe laid stacked up, no plugs in the ends, for weeks. The pipe line was completed and at the water tower there was a screen that had to be cleaned daily. It contained the hair, guts & bones of the little critters that nested in the pipes.

Another example is a water tower’s topside ventilation screen became dislodged. It was never inspected by the city employee. When the state inspected it, it was discovered birds got in a were crapping in the water supply. There were several inches of dead birds and bird crap sediment at the bottom.

There’s a good reason for chlorination.

Don’t get me going on bottled water that is not chlorinated. (A hint: any bacteria or other contaminant can get in it during bottling)

“Thank you, Tricky Dick Nixon, you traitor piece of garbage.”

This guy is one of our most liberal RINO’s that gave us the EPA along with other lib goodies that enabled the counter-culture movement.

And the next most liberal RINO would be Bush.

My point is, these wanna be democrats are just hated by the left.

I could never figure this out.

Isn’t it taught in school any more that water and oil don’t mix!

Different kinds of oil - salad oil doesn't mix with water though...

You are VERY fortunate to be alive.

I've heard that many times.

I used to sniff carbon tetrachloride. It made me go black.

Once while rebuilding a house I stepped on three rusty nails (in a pile of old shingles) that went through my shoe and into my foot. I pulled them out, then had to wade into the stagnant water in the crawl space to get out a dead raccoon. Everyone said I should get a tetanus shot. I didn't.

Then there was the car wreck that fractured by skull and smashed my lower vertebrae into tiny pieces, which went into my spinal cord. The doctors thought I was dead. Later they said I would never walk.

Yes, I am VERY fortunate. I thank GOD all the time.
