She would always laugh at the "know-it-alls" who preached not to eat this or eat that.
No surprise. I’ve seen the studies come and go over the years and most of them are junk science; not all but most. Just like cholesterol in eggs, nitrites in bacon, salt causes HBP, stress cause ulcers; all just not true or gross generalizations on the general population.
I’ve always poured on the salt (a salt lick a day) and my wife would always work on me to cut my intake. When I kinda cut back; at my annual physical the doctor told me that the labs indicated that I should up my salt intake a bit. The wife doesn’t ask about it anymore.
We heard in theater that when Saddam Hussein was captured, they “tortured” him by serving him bland food & withholding salt until he told them where the WMDs were. Rumor had it that Saddam broke down & started singing when someone waved an open bag of Doritos in front of his face.
I’ve learned to smuggle my own salt for the occasional hospital stay where I always get put on `low sodium’ & the food is pretty awful without it.
I guess everyone has forgotten the recent study that showed that people self regulate salt intake no matter how haphazardly it was applied.
I had breakfast in a restaurant last week. Ordered waffles with eggs and ham. I had a hard time eating it because it just didn’t taste right. That’s when I realized the salt was missing - even in the ham. I proceeded using the salt shaker which is something I have never done before. The salt didn’t improve the taste. Food was bland topped with salt. That’s when I realized that salt needs to be cooked with the food in order to taste good.
I’m giving up going out to eat. If I want to eat healthy I’ll do it at home, not when I pay someone to feed me.
Salt is good for us. It is a preservative! hello!
You are giving up going out to eat because of one bad breakfast?
Tells me that these “studies” don’t have any credibility, and should be ignored.
Maybe it was a monk who joined the monastery after his wife died.
This gene thing is a bit confusing to me. I am coming up to my 90th birthday and feeling quite good. My father died from anemia at age 46 before I was born. My mother died at age 62 from intestinal cancer. I should not be enjoying life today by these records. Of course there are problems. My latest being that my doctor finally saw fitting to have me go on 2x per day Ferrous sulfate(over the counter) and that has really put some zip back into my life. I have heard that many if not most of doctors believe the chemical is dangerous. So I would infer that life is not just a matter of genes but also what these genes get for support.
For drinks, Grannie Tea, Grandpa, Ale and Seagram's 7 and a pipe and cheap cigars.
Gramma 97, Grandpa 87,
Just be sure to eat from the basic food groups — grease, salt, caffeine, sugar, and preservatives.
Me too....twice a day.
My doctor 5 years ago told me to cut out the salt.
Next visit 6 months later I told him I was tired all the time.
He discovered through blood tests that I was very low on sodium. Good-Bye Doctor.
My old man was the same way. Made it to 90 and died of the fact he started smoking when he was 15.
‘I still remember taking salt tablets after football practice and gym in high school.’
Fort Benning in the summer of ‘69? We ate salt tablets by the handful and it apparently didn’t ruin my heart.
That is one reason I always thought the sale thing was crap.
Cut out eggs. High cholesterol. Oops! Never mind! Also not true.
My favorite salt is coarse granule sea salt. Goes great with salads!
We didn't use mixes when I was growing up. Pancake recipes do call for salt. Dad was just a little more liberal with the amount required.
