The Legend of Chris Kyle [American Sniper]
Dallas Magazine ^ | April 2013 | Michael J. Mooney

Posted on 01/19/2015 8:49:17 AM PST by Star Traveler

There’s a story about Chris Kyle: on a cold January morning in 2010, he pulled into a gas station somewhere along Highway 67, south of Dallas. He was driving his supercharged black Ford F350 outfitted with black rims and oversize knobby mudding tires. Kyle had replaced the Ford logo on the grill with a small chrome skull, similar to the Punisher emblem from the Marvel Comics series, and added a riot-ready aftermarket grill guard bearing the words ROAD ARMOR. He had just [ ... ] moved back to Texas.

Two guys approached him with pistols and demanded his money and the keys to his truck. With his hands in the air, he sized up which man seemed most confident with his gun.

Kyle knew what confidence with a gun looked like. He was the deadliest sniper in American history. He had at least 160 confirmed kills by the Pentagon’s count, but by his own count—and the accounts of his Navy SEAL teammates—the number was closer to twice that. In his four tours of duty in Iraq, Kyle earned two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars with Valor. He survived six IED attacks, three gunshot wounds, two helicopter crashes, and more surgeries than he could remember. He was known among his SEAL brethren as The Legend and to his enemies as al-Shaitan, “the devil.”

He told the robbers that he just needed to reach back into the truck to get the keys. He turned around and reached under his winter coat instead, into his waistband. With his right hand, he grabbed his Colt 1911. He fired two shots under his left armpit, hitting the first man twice in the chest. Then he turned slightly and fired two more times, hitting the second man twice in the chest. Both men fell dead.

Don't mean to rain on anyones parade but it appears to be a hoax. As far back as Feb 2013 Cleburne police denied it happened at least in Cleburne.

...and apologized for the damage he'd done.

What damage? Ventura is a scumbag who trashed his own "reputation" years ago. There was nothing to damage. This was about money, just everything Ventura does, not some imaginary reputation.

What, is that jerk your brother-in-law or something?

The jury and judge(s) disagree and the judgement, for now, stands.

I have little respect for someone who wrongfully wrecks another man's reputation

One could wreck the 9-11 Truther Jesse Ventura's reputation? ..seriously.

I feel it was always a Chris vs Jesse deal and Ventura should have dropped his case against his widow and moved on since Jesse's name is not mentioned in the book.

(I do agree, Chris shouldn't have called out Ventura on the radio.)

No worries, Ventura now has 1.8 million to repair his reputation.

Regardless of what you or I think of Ventura, the jury and judge(s) believe his livelihood was damaged because of what Kyle said.

Personally, I don't give a rip about Ventura. I stand up for him only because, like all Americans, he has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. His rights were infringed by what Kyle wrote and said and Ventura has the right to seek redress.

(I do agree, Chris shouldn't have called out Ventura on the radio.)

Not just the radio. He also repeated it during his appearance on Bill O'Reilly.

Kyle had the chance to make right what he made wrong and instead chose not to.

I am not necessarily dismissing this just observing there is an absence of corroborating evidence such as surveillance video. If the shoot went down as described it should be available insomuch as it sounds to be clean. There also should be statements from involved LE. Live Leak would be the most likely place to host the video. They even had post action video taken by the Taliban after Operation Redwing.

I just would not like this to be taken by the left and used to ridicule Conservatives if this is found to be a fabrication. The case of the child who claimed to have visited Heaven then ended up recanting his story is good example.

I don’t know that this story has ever been confirmed one way or the other.

The story told by Kyle WAS verified. Not only by the author Mooney but mentioned in Marcus Luttrel's book.

Unfortunately the local law enforcement agencies have no record of the event, no record of a video, no media accounts, and most importantly, no family members of the alleged killed thugs coming forward and wondering what happened to their loved ones.........

As a vet, I have the utmost respect for his DOCUMENTED valor while serving in the Armed Forces and he should have left it at that.

Unfortunately he found it necessary to embellish his reputation by printing and saying things about his civilian life that were either proven not true (bar fight) or the unsubstantiated gas station shooting - which in my opinion is a VERY SERIOUS CLAIM!

And I'm not even going to bring up his claims about snipers on the Super Dome shooting 30 civilian looters.....

You do know that “preponderance of the evidence” is the lowest possible legal standard, right? It’s like 50.1% vs. 49.9%.
And like another poster mentioned, given the wacko Minnesota populace that voted him in as governor there, no surprise a similar jury found for their ex governor.
Boils down to who they want to believe more. They wanted to believe him.
And the “witness” who eavesdropped on him in the bar, who is his friend, laughable.
And the appeals judge who found the jury verdict “reasonable”? Appeals judges can only reverse on errors in law or procedure, not on a jury’s opinion.
