You’re so right! LBJ was basically painted into a corner by the Republicans to sign off on the civil rights bill.
I think he finally saw how that would benefit the Democrats and later said something like... ‘Now the Democrats will own the n*****s for a hundred years’. (that’s paraphrasing from an old man’s memory, but it’s fairly close)
