Russia Cuts Off Ukrainin Gas Supply
Peak Oil News ^ | January 14, 2015 | blog

Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian state energy giant Gazprom to cut supplies to and through Ukraine amid accusations, according to The Daily Mail, that its neighbor has been siphoning off and stealing Russian gas. Due to these “transit risks for European consumers in the territory of Ukraine,” Gazprom cut gas exports to Europe by 60%, plunging the continent into an energy crisis “within hours.” Perhaps explaining the explosion higher in NatGas prices (and oil) today, gas companies in Ukraine confirmed that Russia had cut off supply; and six countries reported a complete shut-off of Russian gas. The EU raged that the sudden cut-off to some of its member countries was “completely unacceptable,” but Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller later added that Russia plans to shift all its natural gas flows crossing Ukraine to a route via Turkey; and Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak stated unequivocally, “the decision has been made.”

As Bloomberg reports,

Russia plans to shift all its natural gas flows crossing Ukraine to a route via Turkey, a surprise move that the European Union’s energy chief said would hurt its reputation as a supplier.

The decision makes no economic sense, Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission’s vice president for energy union, told reporters today after talks with Russian government officials and the head of gas exporter, OAO Gazprom, in Moscow.

Ah Yes, Putin IS to be admired, he has a portrait of Thomas Jefferson over his bed, recites the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution every morning, his exercise consists of an Inning of Baseball and finishes it off with a piece of apple pie.

Yep, Putin is the Pro-Western Leader we need!

It's Not like he Invited Kim Jung Un to Moscow for the May Day Parade, Supplies Iran with Technical Know How for their Nuclear Project, Invaded and Occupied Ukraine and Georgia.

Well, maybe he has done all those things, but it's okay, Putin doesn't like the gays so that makes all those other things a-okay!

Interesting. Anyone else note how convenient these "unattributed accusations" are? They seem somewhat akin to, "Amid accusations of Jewish extortion of Germans, Der Führer has boldly and understandably taken punitive action against Jewish business owners and employees."

The Southstream pipeline cannot come close to carrying all the gas that currently moves through the Ukraine.

This a someone taking a few facts and claiming a bunch of BS around them.

I would think so. Yet, why isn't it mentioned on stock market sites like barron's? Stock traders make it their business to feature events like this. Neither Foxnews or Drudge have mentioned it.

Predictable response after almost toothless Western sanctions. Obama appeased Putin for 6 years before Putin made his move then, predictably, the West “slapped” (not really) sanctions on Russia. Putin is playing 3D Chess while Obama is out in the backyard shooting marbles...Russia worked for years to create a European dependency then, at the right moment, WHAM!
The West is as naive as a a lamb in the woods...the lamb is Obama. The wolves are hungry and Obama’s rear legs shudder and he wets himself.

After years of insulting the Russians it makes no sense to them.

Some of the affected countries (mentioned in the article): Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey all reported a halt in gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine.

According to Yahoo Finance crude is at $50.25, up 3.65%. Something seems to be afoot.

Possibly in reaction to the Swiss currency debacle. Are the Russians sensing the end is near for the global economy?

Not sure he cares, much like the Iranians didn’t care when their economy tanked. It actually allows the leaders to point to the USA as the cause of all economic woes.

If we had an intelligent, pro-American, pro-democracy President, he would have long ago helped Ukraine out with their energy needs.

Well lets see how long Putey can keep it up. The ruble is crashing. People are flocking to buy luxuries in Russia before they disappear. So cutting back the gas revenues is not going to be too smart.

Putin is up to his azz in alligators in the Ukraine and he can’t figure out how to back out of the swamp.

It’s not like he tried to tried to exacerbate the 2008 financial crisis for US.
