Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who repeatedly clashed with GOP leaders in the last Congress, has not been asked to return as vice chairman of grassroots outreach for the Senate Republican campaign arm.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) said neither Cruz nor Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who was the NRSCs finance vice chairman in the last election cycle, would serve additional stints in the committees leadership.
No, Rob is up for reelection. We wouldnt ask him to do that, Wicker said. I think well be releasing some names in the next week of people willing to do this. An NRSC aide said officials typically serve only one term.
All senators in NRSC leadership commit to serving two-year terms, and the 2014 cycle was no different, the aide said.
But there have been exceptions, including Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who served as NRSC chairman in the 2010 and 2012 cycles.
And there are several reasons why Senate Republicans might not want Cruz to return to their campaign arm.
He drew the ire of colleagues in 2013 by raising money for the Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF), which backed primary challengers to now-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Sen. Thad Cochran (Miss.).
Cruz attempted to mend fences with angry GOP colleagues by informing them in the fall of 2013 he would no longer help the SCF, but by then some damage had been done.
GOP senators were also miffed with Cruz for demanding that Congress use a 2013 government funding bill to defund ObamaCare, which led to a 16-day government shutdown that damaged the GOP brand.

I’m shocked I tell ya, just shocked!
WE’ve been GOPe-ified.
When the NRSC had to beg Cruz not to endorse anybody primarying a sitting Senator, in addition to his work with DeMint, it was obvious they feared and hated him, especially John Cornyn and Thad Cochran.
The House now has a replacement Repub Study Cmte, and I suspect the Senate will have the same, if only informally.
I think well be releasing some names in the next week of people willing to do this. An NRSC aide said officials typically serve only one term.
Maybe...but gone also is Rob Portman, an estab guy, because of his re election campaign. McConnell and Cornyn knew who Cruz was last time anyway.
I think this is a big non story.
That was before Cruz basically ran against both of them. This is payback.
Believe what you want....I have it on good authority he asked to be off......
And no, McConnell and Cornyn have known for years what Cruz was about. There’ll be plenty plenty plenty of reason to get pissed at McConnell INC in the weeks ahead...this is NOT one of them.
Now, now, now, now Do you not realize that Mitch McConnell is the pride of Republican Voters in Kentucky.
I tend to agree.
Folks, look at the source. The Hill isn’t exactly interested in GOP unity, so they run a story that basically says “GOP snubs Cruz by doing things... um... pretty much they way they’ve always been done.”
By being off the NRSC he is free to endorse as he sees fit.
This is where the gope-STAB pain starts.
including Cruz for President....
May God bless you and all Mississippi patriots after what happened to you last year. I don’t blame you at all. Wicker should be out, nothing connected to the Mississippi mistake should be allowed anywhere near the NRSC.
They grow RINOs big here in my state (FL), Crist/Rubio/Bush, but I have to admit that your state’s RINOs, with a little help from McConnell, have the most nerve.
