In 1959 I walked 1 mile each day to kindergarten alone.
In 1959, I rode on the commuter train about to the Torresdale Station (north-east Philadelphia) and then walked a quarter mile to my first grade class. (OK, was with Billy, a fourth grader, and Marie, a sixth grader.)
Later that school year, my family moved, so I could ride into Philadelphia with the next door neighbor. I would get out of the car, then cross 4 lanes of traffic (I was 6 years old!)

From the age of 7 I crossed a major street, rode the city bus 3 miles, and walked 5 blocks further in a slightly seedy part of town every school day for 3 years. Even in 20 below, or the heat of Indian summer.
I survived that, in a city known as “little Detroit” due to its crime rate at the time.

In 1959 I walked 1 mile each day to kindergarten alone.I walked alone to a Saturday music lesson through the woods from 1956-60 in the Silver Spring area, when I was a small girl. Not anymore. Now, it's Sanctuaryville, you have to order in Spanish at the McDonald's drive-thru, and the traffic is hideously slow because of the illegals.
