I think this was done to show that both Reggie and Barack are NOT gay. If you have to make such and effort to “prove a negative” then most likely the rumors are true.
I think the true story is that Michelle walked in on Reggie looking for Barack, and it was Barack who was hiding under the sheets.

In that role (known as “bodyman”), Love spent a lot of time alongside Obama. The two men got to know each other extremely well. Sometimes too well. Obama walked in because he was going to join in the action between Love and the other guy.
