It’s certainly an opportunity to take advantage of an event and get something started.
But we won’t do it.
At least one of the CH cartoonists is on record declaring his hate & distain for the “Je suis Charlie” crowd. Easy for ‘em all to declare warm fuzzies after the fact.
Okay, I’m down with that.
I am a rightwing religious person and I know that liberty means the protection of imprudent, offensive and blasphemous speech.
In a week or two, this will all be forgotten and the left will be on the march against Western civilization once again. We've seen this behavior many times, over and over.
Treasonous scoundrels remain treasonous scoundrels and especially after they have satisfied their desire for preening or hiding their real aims by supporting their real enemy (us) when public opinion sways to our side. Then they start their termite process once again to eat out our foundations.
I wouldn't walk across the street to protect that kind of "free speech."
“While I mourn the deaths of those who were murdered & I do not support Islamic freaks, I also find very little about CH to be supportive of”
No, I’m not going to subscribe to it, any more than I’m going to subscribe to any number of American publications who haven’t earned my dollar vote of support.
So what? “Je suis Charlie” because there is no equivalence whatsoever between a) people who publish controversial opinions I like or dislike and b) people who commit wholesale murder because someone published something they dislike.
Yes, CH was all that. But they're no more an enemy of Western Civilization than Mad Magazine is.
Many cartoons are inflammatory and antagonistic to one group or another, and unfairly so, at that.
So, regardless of how leftist CH or its employees might have been, they were by no means enemies of Western Civilization. Capitalism, free enterprise, and Christianity, maybe, but not "Western Civilization"...
Humor is humor, no matter how vile or infantile. And no humor that I can think of can be legitimately characterized as an enemy to Western Civilization...
If that random stranger were someone who voted to have my health care insurance of twenty years canceled, then I would say that was a very appropriate exercise of your free speech. Although I would have much preferred you'd beaten *him* to a pulp....
