I rhink his excuse is he did not want to be seen supporting a cause that ~~slandered~~ satirized the Prophet Mohammed. It would have been perfect to send someone in his stead and get around much of the expense and security.

Here is the entire portion of the UN speech from the WH website:

"The future must not belong to those who target Coptic Christians in Egypt -- it must be claimed by those in Tahrir Square who chanted, "Muslims, Christians, we are one." The future must not belong to those who bully women -- it must be shaped by girls who go to school, and those who stand for a world where our daughters can live their dreams just like our sons. (Applause.)

"The future must not belong to those corrupt few who steal a country’s resources -- it must be won by the students and entrepreneurs, the workers and business owners who seek a broader prosperity for all people. Those are the women and men that America stands with; theirs is the vision we will support.

"The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied. (Applause.)"

Too many quote just the one sentence about the propher of Islam. Not very forceful about Jews in those paragraphs, just the terse referencee to Holocause deniers. Only Obama knows where his heart really lies. But I am disappointed that we didn't have somebody represent us. If you didn't want to support Charlie, there was still the Jewish supermarket to rally for and to be a team player with so many world leaders in something worth supporting imo.

It's a little dishonest just to cherry pick the part about Islam and ignore the rest of it. I looked it up before so knew there was more but when just the one part gets quoted over and over, it is a little misleading. Nobody's done that in this thread. Just sayin'.
