AUSTIN (KXAN) — Governor-Elect Greg Abbott criticized city bans this week and said reducing “regulatory burdens” would make Texas a better state.
“The truth is Texas is being California-ized and you may not even be noticing it,” said Abbott as he spoke Thursday. “It’s being done at the city level with bag bans, fracking bans, tree cutting bans. We’re forming a patchwork quilt of bans and rules and regulations that is eroding the Texas model.”
If you live in Austin, you’ve likely had an experience with the plastic bag ban.
“I realized that something that I originally thought was a hassle is something that I now appreciate,” said Robert Schmidt, in support of the bag ban in Austin.
Other shoppers haven’t come around to the changes.
“I never know if my bags are in my truck or in my van,” said another shopper.
Texas has already seen attempts from the legislature to limit city rules. A bill failed last session known as the “Shopping Bag Freedom Act,” which aimed invalidate city bag bans. This year another bill would require certain city ballot measures to go in front of the attorney general before it could go to a vote.
The governor will have to use his influence to accomplish changes. Clinical Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs Sherri Greenberg says she believes Abbott has support — given the makeup of at the Capitol.
“The governor comes in in his new position. He’s in his honeymoon period,” said Greenberg. “He won overwhelmingly. He also has Republican control, all the statewide offices and the House and the Senate.”
Greenberg says the issue raised by Abbott is a continuation of a long-standing debate in Texas about local control and the amount of regulations in the state.
“[Unchecked over-regulation by cities] is contrary to my vision for Texas,” said Abbott. “My vision is one where individual liberties are not bound by city limit signs. I will insist on protecting unlimited liberty to ensure that Texas will continue to grow and prosper.”

Austin is Berkeley with some people who talk funny! And Berkeley has just as many barbeque joints as Austin.
They are not all conservatives, that move from California. I live in Sugar Land. After Sandy Hook, some lady at the local Paki-sack was railing about gun control, telling the clerk and I that guns should outlawed. She said she just moved from California, and that wouldn’t happen there. She asked me if I agreed with gun control, and I politely said “ No ma’am, I am a Texan, and I fully support the 2nd amendment. She called me a redneck and stormed off. Cracks me up every time I think about.
“They want you to buy the reusable bags but that is IMHO gross. People bring those back repeatedly. They are dirty. Studies have shown that they carry bacteria. “
So you have to use “plastic liners.”
The first thing Texas needs to do is, anyone with a degree from a blue state school, should be shoveling sh!t.
And Babs Boxer “immigrated” from Brooklyn! The $hit that's permeated California and a lot of other Western States, originated in The Northeast.
To really understand Austin’s problem just look at the largest employers in Austin. You have to go way down the list to find employers that are not economically insulated from reality.

Well I know for a fact that Las Vegas controls Nevada Politics and it has been a RAT union town for almost all of its existence. California has had little political influence there. Harry Reid is “home grown.” Just try going to a trade show in LV as an exhibitor. You can’t pick up a screwdriver, you have to call one of the “union crafts” to do anything in your booth. And it usually takes two, one to do the work and another to be his interpreter (unless you speak Spanish).
I wish they could be more like JimRob and fight it rather than whining about it.

The elites have maids and cooks do much of their shopping, or they buy in small quantities, making quick visits to boutique markets for some fish, Arugula, and wine, and some mushrooms.
Bringing their own stylish bag fits their lifestyle, it is insane for the mother of a family of 4 to six people shopping at Walmart and buying two carts worth of groceries.

My take on it as well. Generally speaking, the more that government can be localized, the better.
I speak as a person who lives in a very conservative area of a very liberal state and am sick of state liberal government rules being imposed on everybody.

The shame is the Cali is such a damn beautiful place. Whenever R2 happens, I’m all for driving the libs and their wards into the Pacific so the good patriotic folks that believe in America and make this work can enjoy it. Would even give the libs free passage to the NE lib-world or their beloved Europe.
Texas needs a Commerce Clause. All of Texas should be one big free trade zone.

Round Rock, Lakeway, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown benefits from this, their business and population growth has been exponential since Dell left Austin. Taking back roads keeps me completely out of Austin to work and back, I haven’t spent a dime there in probably years.
They were trying to bring that bag ban to Houston last I heard. Not sure where that sits now...
