Scrawl found on United jet, attendants fired when they refuse to fly

On July 14, 2014, United crews departing from San Francisco International Airport bound for Hong Kong found the words "BYE BYE" in six-inch high letters alongside two faces, one smiling and the other one also smiling, but with eye brows drawn in a more sinister expression. The writing was traced in an oil slick from the auxiliary engine in the Boeing 747-4000 aircraft's tail cone.

In the 26-page complaint, the flight attendants said that the markings constituted a"credible and specific threat to the safety of the aircraft." The flight attendants informed United officials they were uncomfortable flying unless extra security measures were taken. They asked for deplaning the 300-plus passengers and a safety sweep to ensure that no explosive devices were planted on the plane.

Just an APU but it still points toward mischief in the flight crew.

If people realized how many ARABIC people work in the maintenance or service areas of airports .. they would never fly. Can’t get me on an airplane.......I have a Sikh buddy whose wife wants him to visit India this coming summer. He asked me, “Bruce, if I asked at the ticket counter who is the pilot who will fly the plane, will they tell me?” I explained the planes come from all over so they may not know. Also, the plane may start off with one pilot but by the time it gets to India, there may have been two or three other pilots flying it. Keep in mind this was shortly after the plane disappeared from Malaysia. He told me “I will NOT get on ANY plane unless the pilot’s name is Smith or Jones!! Too many Muslims fly now.”

No, and since Flash Jr.’s gone to bed for the night, I can’t get an authoritative source to confirm it.

Probably the ground crew expressing their belief in a “humorous way” that the oil belching APU is about to expire (not as humorous in a post 9/11 world). As indicated above, not a flight safety issue...deferred maintenance item.

The APU may not be needed for flight but they are needed to start the other four engines and provide air circulation In the cabin

I spent 32 years in the aerospace business: 1) engines and fuel systems and 2) electric power generation systems (EPGS). I'm well versed on Boeing B747-400, B757, B767, B77, and B787; Airbus A300-600, A310, A319. A320, A321, A330, A340, and A380 EPGS.

Because of poor piloting you can see the APU in the tail of this Singapore Airlines 747 (scroll down):

As I recall, on a B747-400 only one APU needs to be operational to start an engine when ground power is not available. Once a main engine generator comes on line, the Generator Line Contactors automatically reconfigure to balance the electrical load until all four engines are running and all four generators are powering their respective electrical buses. The APU continues to run until it is shut down, but it is dropped from the electrical bus when the fourth generator is brought on-line when its GLC closes.

The reason the B747-400 has two APU is due to the large electrical power requirements. (It also has two External Power (EP) receptacles for ground power needs.) The Bus Power Control Unit (BPCU) coordinates opening and closing of the EP/APU/GEN line contactors with the Generator Control Units (GCU). This is done automatically as the various power sources become available or are shut down.

When are the airlines going to take this seriously ..??

In today's climate of political correctness, there is not a hell of a lot the airlines can do about. Except to keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best while expecting the worse. If they attempted to do anything to correct the situation, the full might of the Government would be on them like white on rice.

“I think the firing of these flight attendants is outrageous.”

Yeah, I had a close relative who worked at the United SFO maintenance base for a short period of time as an engineer. He said that the IAM was always pissed off about something and their response was to walk around the shop dropping wrenches on the floor all day long. The day this person quit, there wasn’t anyone available to tell that he was leaving, so he walked into the head guy’s office to tell him and was offered six possible alternative positions if he were to stay. He still said Sayonara. The “Friendly Skies” are not friendly to the employees.

“I’m with the flight attendants on this one.”......

I’m curious to know what the pilot and other crew members thought. Not mentioned in the article.
