A friend of mine, who works and travels exclusively in New Mexico, has told me many times of the loose if not completely wild dog packs that roam the reservation near Albuquerque. If they are hungry or threatened, bet your sweet bippy they will kill.
I have been in the woods around Albuquerque at night. The idea of coyotes made me nervous, but I never considered packs of dogs.
I’m a good friend of man’s best friend, but even I will admit there are times when you have to hunt them down and exterminate them like... well, dogs. And that’s it.
There is a similar problem associated with northern reservations in Canada.
I once saw a pack of wild dogs bring down a deer, and man is far less nimble, and, unarmed, far less able to defend himself.
But I thought that dogs are perfectly man’s best friend? Never offend anyone?
People need to respect the dog, not love it. Do not ever forget they can kill, and as carnivores are meant for it.
I have been through Gallap many times and have stayed in Window Rock, AZ which is just across the NM AZ state line. I have seen many many dog packs, enough to scare me when I took my small dogs for walks.
In addition to dogs running wild, so do cattle and horses. About the only livestock that are inside of fences are sheep.
Here in Las Cruces, there are coyote packs that come into town for water and food. Water is found at a pond at a golf course and food is found in back yards. Usually pet dogs or cats!
