HAYDEN, Idaho -- A 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his mother after he reached into her purse at a northern Idaho Wal-Mart and her concealed gun fired, authorities said Tuesday.
Veronica J. Rutledge, 29, was shopping with her son and three other children, Kootenai County sheriff's spokesman Stu Miller said. Rutledge was from Blackfoot in southeastern Idaho, and her family had come to the area to visit relatives.
She had a concealed weapons permit. Miller said the young boy was left in a shopping cart, reached into his mother's purse and grabbed a small-caliber handgun, which discharged one time.
Deputies who responded to the Wal-Mart found Rutledge dead, the sheriff's office said.
"It appears to be a pretty tragic accident," Miller said.

First, prayers for the family and for the child, who will someday learned of what happened.
BTW - There are "reliable national statistics". They just don't show that the author(s) would like them to show.
I long for the day when we see daily news articles about how a toddler choked on arugala or how a diet how in soy will give you cancer!
We conservatives need to take back the media that drive these ridiculous memes
Good God. 4 kids are now Motherless. And only 29 years old. Do they have a Dad at least? or 4 Dads???????
Yes they did, a very close family BTW.
Indeed it is sad.... However....

She didn’t practice good gun safety and her children now paid the price be becomming motherless...
You NEVER leave you sidearm unattended...
EVER
If it were’nt for stupid people we would have less incidents like these. As a gun owner the mother should have know. Not to leave her weapon where a child could gain access.Sorry for the child. He’ll remember that for the rest of his life.
This happened over a week ago and has now been posted here more than once. AP and the media can only run this so long. Why are you?
Oldplayer
Again? Wow, that’s twice in two weeks.

Or the idiot VEGAN parents who starve to death their infant child because mommy has dried up and they are feeding it nothign but raw vegan foods that the infant cannot process and are lacking vital fats and proteins that infants NEED!
At 2 years old, maybe not. I thought about this the other day when it was first reported. How will his father handle this . It even entered my mind that putting the child up for adoption with a loving family that does no know the circumstances might not be a bad idea.
Unfortunate, but the purse should always have been on the mother, and the pistol should have had its safety on.
The story is tragic, but the reality remains that if not for the criminal element in cites like New Orleans, Detroit and Hayden, Idaho, law abiding citizens would not have to arm themselves.
That's a very strange comment, but okay, whatever.
The other 3 children were her nieces.
Another story reports that she was a chemical engineer working on nuclear reasearch, apparently for DOE, at Idaho National Labs. She had published several scientific papers. She and her husband were both experienced with guns, both had concealed carry permits, and both always carried. Not the kind of person who usually makes these types of mistakes. Moral of the story: even smart people can get careless.

The safety thing was what came to my mind, first. Tragic.
You’re right. I’m checking to see if she was R, D, or Tea. Probably NRA.
If a Glock all he needs is to be able to pull the trigger.
