DEBRIS SPOTTED OFF INDONESIA COAST, POSSIBLE LINK TO AIRASIA
AP ^ | Dec 30 2014

Several pieces of debris have been spotted floating in the sea off Borneo island, possibly linked to the missing AirAsia jetliner, an Indonesia National Search and Rescue spokesman said Tuesday.

Yusuf Latif said an Indonesian military aircraft saw white, red and black objects, including what appears to be a life jacket, off the coast, about 105 miles (170 kilometers) south of Pangkalan Bun.

He said the agency has dispatched at least one helicopter to pick up at least 10 pieces of debris to be checked. The items will be taken to the search and rescue coordination post on Belitung Island.

"This is the most significant finding, but we cannot confirm anything until the investigation is completed," he said.

The plane with 162 people on board disappeared Sunday on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore after encountering storm clouds.

“I haven’t heard anything about a search for an underwater locator beacon.”

You have to be relatively close to a ULB to detect it, so you don’t normally start listening for them until you have a relatively small search area.

Unless you have no idea where to look at all, then you have to start mowing large swaths of lawn, like with MH370.

One picture appears to be an orange life jacket.

All of the life jackets I’ve seen on airplanes are inflatable with connection straps at the bottom rather than ties in the middle, so much different from what the picture shows. Of course, I’ve only looked at life jackets on US carriers.

Could actually be a life jacket. Whether it is from the plane is much more doubtful. If the plane fell into the ocean from 36,000 feet, there is going to be a lot of debris floating around out there.

Give it a couple more days and I suspect they will find the debris field.

Sad, but at least relatives will get some closure and know that their worst fears are confirmed.

Bodies, lifejackets, and luggage have all been seen in the search zone....We spotted about 10 big objects and many more small white-coloured objects which we could not photograph,’ he said.

I’ve been following this on tv while getting things done around the house. Sad news but expected.
I feel bad for the families but at least they’ll have some closure unlike the families of the MH370 victims. Most of these families will get to bury their loved ones.
