I recall many FReepers complaining about Sarah Palin's accent. Her liking country music also bothered some. Generally, one would label such complaints as "shallow".
Content trumps "accent"...
Let me help you out here.....for a TALK SHOW HOST - how you sound is NOT shallow. It’s key.
For Belling, he’s okay, but nothing special, so the accent aggravation is not worth it. There’s a reason ZIP ZERO NADA national ad campaigns feature a “skonsin” accent. It’s very unpopular around the country.
Belling has a horrible one - about 20X as sharp as Governor Walkers - and 20X as sharp as Vicki McKenna, a Madison talk show host who is a friend of mine and who has a delightful voice.
Also, I would not listen to Palin as a talk show host.......either......altho I will go hear her at a rally or give a speech - and I am a big supporter of her part on the national stage.

To some, I suppose it is.
As it happens, I have a close friend who is a sports talk show host in DFW. He has a face made for radio and a voice made for print.
Yet, for many years, he had the highest rated AM drive show in the market.
Why was he so successful? Content.
I'd grant that one can't be inarticulate and succeed on the radio. But accent/voice-quality aren't killer negatives if the content is up-to-snuff.
In the meantime, while I'm aware of Belling's "skonsin" accent, I don't find it offensive in any way. Maybe it's because I'm an Okie...
There are exceptions to every rule, but there is not a single national figure in any field, other than hockey, where this skonsin brogue is liked widely.
I don’t know what your guy in DFW is all about with his voice or his content, but I’ll say again: Bellings content is okay, but just okay, nothing special, nothing worth tuning into - not worth the accent.
There’s TONS of good content.
But you can go on and on about this example or that example, but voices are a HUGE key in the vast majority of radio talk hosts success. Yes, content too, but certainly voice.
oh, let me add totally humorless also.......something I think makes a host un-listenable.
I wanted to puke when he said what great conservatives Priebus, Ryan, Walker and Johnson are.
The irony is David Clarke runs as a Democrat and these liberals run as Republicans.
Id say Alex Jones has a pretty good voice for radio.
I think he would actually do more poorly if not for his voice even though he is targeting the conspiracy audience and you would think he could consolidate that.
well, this is the problem with Wisconsin.....you have to grade them on a curve, because it’s a damned liberal state. Walker and Johnson are great, for Wisconsin.....for South Carolina? Not so much.
