I’m starting to think some version of ISIS has kidnapped these people. Sometimes a Muslim’s worst enemy is an opposing group of other Muslims. The Shia and Suni hate wars go back for multiple generations. For the most radical, no explanation of why they should hate someone is needed. Just show them them target.

Allow me to join you in politically incorrect thought processes. This happened over the Java Sea, the haunt of very well equipped Muslim pirates. Indonesia and Malaysia are both having Muslim troubles.
