There are surprisingly few high-capacity crossing points along the Mississippi River, handling a staggering volume of rail and truck cargo. Those bridges present a strategic vulnerability to the United States; the loss of any one of them would throw a major wrench into US commerce, and the loss of two or more would create chaos. Peter T. Deutermann (author and retired Captain, USN) wrote the 1999 novel Train Man about just such a scenario, and the idea has bothered me ever since.

All you have to do is look back to the effects of the large Mississippi and Missouri River floods of the recent past on river crossings and nearby highways to see what can happen.
