One of the U.S. Army’s giant surveillance blimps will rise to 10,000 feet above Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland on Friday for a three-year test. A second aircraft will begin testing in January.

The Army’s Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System (JLENS), which is built by Raytheon, will be tested for its ability to identify incoming enemy aircraft.

“This will enable senior defense officials to support a determination whether to transition JLENS capabilities to an enduring mission at the conclusion of the three-year operational exercise,” the North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement on Tuesday, military.com reported.

I understand testing the Saturn engines back in the sixties broke windows in Huntsville. They had to avoid overcast days where the clouds reflected the sound downwards.

My dogs just love the demolition training.

Muslims terrorists have so many boots on the ground in America that such a big target is easy to knock down pre-aircraft strike. I guess govt blimp dreamers never heard of the term “coordinated attack”.

duuuuh such a stupid assinine blimp idea.

They’ve been in Full Operation over Fort Huachuca, Arizona since 1984.

They are being tested at Aberdeen because that is where CECOM (Communications Electronics Command) is located. They manage the equipment.

Good way to get the airspace under them closed (10,000 foot long tether).

There’s a lot more than 3 Army test facilities.

Now, if you suspend a chicken with a strobe under the blimp, THAT’S high-tech.

I am being honest. And I am also not stupid.

Please check my posting history.

Somewhere between 25% and 50% of my initial comments on threads are some kind of wise crack or joke about the structure/interpretation of the headline or first paragraph of the story - particularly when editors use cumbersome or clumsy language in their headlines.

” particularly when editors use cumbersome or clumsy language in their headlines. “

This is where I believe the DoD budget process just continually screws the American taxpayer.

Here we have a very similar project, theoretically much more capable than this one and yet, lots of $$$ spent on competing projects...
