on the verge of a financial meltdown that threatens its ability to continue operating

And? What are we supposed to do about it? No government money should be used to bail them out. But I’m sure that’s what will happen. Maybe the NAACP should give them money since they only care about advancing colored people.

Perhaps some of its famous alumni, which apparently include NFL players, can shore this school up.

On a serious note, I think that the era of separate historically black colleges has about run its course. Those, of whatever race, who are qualified are admitted to schools, based upon their abilities and aptitude. There are a number of HBC’s in North Carolina, and many are facing gradual degradation if they remain all black. NC A&T is majority black enrolled, but it is a quality institution and many non-blacks attend. The same goes for Winston-Salem State University (I live in that are). But other schools, Fayetteville State and NC Central, among others, are not doing as well. There needs to be a transition from viewing these schools as “black universities” to something else, but I don’t know how it should be described. We have the flagship state schools such as UNC Chapel Hill and NC State (where my son attended), and then there is perhaps a slight drop to schools such as Appalachian State (where my daughter is currently in grad school). The “black schools” may have to take their place among these schools, if they wish to survive.
