Are millennials too spoiled for the workplace?
CBS News ^

Posted on 12/10/2014 6:49:40 AM PST by TigerClaws

The economic recovery has not been kind to millennials. They make less money than previous generations did, they're more likely to be unemployed and they're burning through cash without saving much of it.

Now comes more evidence that the economic odds are stacked against them: Many corporate executives are making no effort to attract workers under age 35, a new survey says. One reason: Millennials are developing a reputation as workplace divas who need more handholding and who will bolt from jobs at the drop of a hat.

Well they went out like sheeple to vote for the current administration. So they have no one to blame but themselves if they went to college, have mountains of debt, but the economy they voted for only has them working as a part time barrista and they can only afford to live back home with their parents.

They aren't so interested in taking on experienced professionals in their 40s either (they can pay someone younger less or offshore it altogether).

Voting for RATs is strong evidence of an attitude of entitlement. I had a local plumbing contractor get really unhappy with me because I didn't select his recommendation for a water heater.

He demanded to know why. I told him it has a shorter warranty, a higher price tag, a lower capacity and a higher operating cost than an alternative quality brand offered by Home Depot.

"But, I'm local!," he insisted! "I could have matched that."

Replied I, 'You just gave me another reason; an entitlement mentality.'

It’s easy to understand. Children of Liberal Media Indoctrination finally exit their Matrix and land in reality.

Plenty of them had good things to say about the younger generation: Some 70 percent praised their technological savvy

Oh, please. While I'll admit that some application of social media is important for conducting a successful marketing campaign, just knowing how to "tweet" and find one's way around Facebook and Vine does not constitute "technical savvy-ness." Just because you carry the latest smartphone and know how to program the DVR to record every episode of the "Daily Show" does not mean you're the next Bill Gates.

We've all seen how the "tech-savvy" kids in the Obama communication squad are quick to come up with their hashtag-of-the-day, but the lack of substance is apparent.

I think many of the Millenials need to be homeless and forced to live on the streets to understand how brutal and uncaring the world really can be. It would immediately change them from the spoiled and disrespectful liberal mindset to the respectful and thankful mindset of the conservative quick.

Go watch “Royal” by Lorde (and Weird Al’s hilarious sendup “Foil”).

It’s the Millennials’ sad, self-absorbed national anthem.

Were we called “savvy” for knowing how to work a VCR?

No.

I am sick of people thinking kids are somehow suddenly “so smart” because they know how to use a computer. They grew up with it! If they’re allowed to use things, they get the hang of it. Big deal. Only total morons (and I know one at least) will never get it right.

Certain people I know are also in awe of this, like the genetics changed suddenly and they are all “smart”. I assure you, they are not. At best, they are knowledgeable - about just one thing.

Our schools also take it far too seriously. One of my concerns about our private school is that they are on the bandwagon for “tech” - actually buying iPads for kids and everything, because they “must know” how to use it, not to mention “the vast array of info” they can dig up. Never mind all the messing around they can do on them. Yet, no money to buy plain old-fashioned textbooks that can be used year after year! (Dittoes is the order here, endless paper.)

How do we know these things will be relevent in even 10 years? Maybe Star Trek will start up and we just have to talk to PCs to get what we want.

Major weaknesses in the next generation are a severe deterioration in mechanical skills, the skills you need to become skilled labor.
For example, you may be able to write an app to track car RPM over time and gas mileage, but can’t change car oil or a flat tire. People who write about saving watersheds, but can’t unclog a toilet or clean their own gutters. You can create great multimedia presentations on saving the planet and eating local but can’t plant a garden, know how to weed it or cook dinner from scratch. You’re savvy dealing with database errors but can’t handle sick toddlers.

To get needed reliability is A big reason why employers often want to hire Mexican immigrants. Like it or not that’s a reality. And probably why the chamber of commerce and their Gop-e’s support amnesty and open borders Because so many Americans won’t work reliably.

Exactly. Today's kids have near-limitless information at their fingertips, but they have no concept of how it actually gets there. Yes, they're aware of Google and how to use a search engine (though I suspect that most don't know how to correctly apply Boolean logic to filter their search), and even worse, they have little context in which to place that information.

What I find interesting about the kids I’ve run into is their lack of curiosity. When faced with a problem, whether it be in the workplace or personal lives, they simply falter. Its as if they run up against a wall and if there is not a ladder right in front of them, they stop.

No one is teaching them how to go around, over, or under that wall.

The exception of course are men and women who have served in the service, especially the Army and Marines. Most of them have literally had to find their ways around walls. And they are very motivated to get around them quickly and safely.

Try getting a job being a 50 year old who has run their own business for the past ten years.

Not impossible, but pretty damned difficult.

But they can’t change the oil or plugs in their car if they have one. Probably can’t safely switch out a light fixture or receptacle. Forget basic plumbing. And don’t learn anything because as my nephew says, ‘I can just look it up on Google’. My guess is that at 63, outside of social media which I proudly avoid like the plague, I am as tech savvy as the majority of Millennial and can do all of the abovementioned tasks.

Just wait until all the rioters from these Universities try to enter the workforce, the doors will be closed to them.
