The Million Man Cigarette and Salt March

In the good old days, when a week was as full of gossipy news as this one was, I’d head off to the bar near the National Press Club. There, amid clouds of smoke and the reek of decades of cheap booze, reporters would sit around and spread the dirt in an atmosphere of bonhomie. Now, to watch reporters at leisure I have to go to some damned net cafe where kids fresh out of journalism schools they went to because their grades in area studies stunk and they wanted “to make a difference” hang out. So I went to the Fair Trade Shade Grown Beans where they sat around trading narratives.

It wasn’t a good week for them. “Campus culture of rape” had taken a body blow when it turned out the claims against a University of Virginia fraternity gang rape could not be substantiated; something the Rolling Stone author who first published the tale might have learned had she or her editors exercised normal investigative journalism caution. (Lena Dunham’s campus rape story also fell apart.)

Thank you Clarice for a well placed bit of humor on the current state of purveyors of "news that we need to know".

Mrs. Bears graduated from UVA (AKA “The University”) in the late 70’s.

This week-end, she received an e-mail missive from “President” Sullivan containing much hand-wringing over “Jackie’s” alleged ordeal, and which ultimately advanced “the seriousness of the charge is more important than its accuracy” meme—The attempted pivot fully underway.

Mrs. Bears was friends with several Phi Kaps, and sent a return note asking if a formal apology to the brothers of Phi Kappa Psi would be forthcoming. Of course, she doesn’t expect a response (let alone an apology).

Mrs. Bears also noted that, during her time there, UVA had in place a provincial system know as the honor code which governed the conduct of students. (Supposedly it still exists as one of our nieces is a First Year student and was talking about it during the family Thanksgiving celebration.) One of the more prominent violations of said code was lying. It will be interesting to see if “Jackie” will be charged with an honor violation for her vicious slander against Phi Kappa Psi.

Not all is lost with the UVA issue. Since both the perp and the victim turn out to be fictional characters, couldn’t the write just write a fictional apology?
