what Garner had was “ air hunger” a sensation of lack of air. The fact that he was speaking clearly proves his airway was not obstructed. With his morbid obesity, hypertension and asthma laying him prone would be enough to have him feel like he couldn’t breathe.

If a 5 year old boy has you in a choke hold, will you be able to say anything?
How about a 10 year old? 15 year old? 20 year old?
They could all put you in a choke hold with varying degrees of effect on your speech.
In this situation we are talking about a very large man being choked by someone almost half his size so it’s an apt analogy...although I’m all but certain anyone here could admit it.
